Starter motor bush for air-cooled VWs with a 12v starter motor in a 6v gearbox.Air-cooled VW starter motors have no internal front bushing, relying instead on an external 'floating' bush in the gearbox bell housing.
With the introduction of 12v electrics to aircooled VW's the sizes of the starter shaft and the gearbox hole were both decreased to allow for the larger '12v' flywheel.
Early and late gearboxes and starters are interchangeable by the use of 'conversion' bushes.
Approximate 6v and 12v bush sizes are shown below (with the sizes for this bush in red) should you have any uncertainty as to which bush is required.
